Bioinformatics spans a long range of activities focusing on developing and applying algorithms and computational tools for analysis of biological data, e.g. DNA sequences. The amount of publicly available biological data grows rapidly and despite an almost equal growth in the capabilities of contemporary computers, the handling and analysis biological data requires very efficient algorithms and tools. In this talk, I will present examples of bioinformatics problems and solutions, e.g. gene finding based on phylogenetic foot-printing by a simple extension of traditional sequence comparison. Furthermore, I will talk about some of the activities at the Bioinformatics Research Center (BiRC), University of Aarhus, see e.g. http://www.birc.au.dk.
