ABSTRACT

Within the last few decades the airline industry has been at the frontier with respect to applying advanced optimization methods in the planning process, both concerning material and manpower.

In the talk we will first give an overview of how the planning is done and then go into details concerning the mathematical models which are used in the various phases of the planning. We will also discuss the solution of the models where advanced standard-software is applied together with tailor made methods based on structural cutting planes, column generation and Benders decomposition.

The talk with give the participants a first insight into first why it is necessary to have mathematically complicated tools in the toolbox, when one has to handle real world problems and second that these tools can in fact be used to solve the problems.

The colloquium will last 2 times 45 minutes.
