ABSTRACT

Operations Research is historically a discipline being driven by specific real life problems. Thus, OR is indeed an applied science and so it is important that the theoretical work in the field focuses on real life applications: it is of no value to spend several days on solving a problem to optimality when in real life you only have a limited planning time at hand. Likewise there is a tendency to simplify planning problems in order to fit them into standard problems (VRP, VRPTW, etc.). By making such simplifications important rules or constraints may be lost and the findings will be of no practical interest.

The presentation will serve as an introduction to real life transportation planning and route optimization based on actual solutions Transvision has implemented for various customers. A number of planning cases will be described focusing on the problem formulation and on some of the basic concepts of the algorithmic approach to deal with this.

For 30 years Transvision has provided solutions within the field of transportation planning and route optimization. Transvision is a market leading company working with both large national and multinational based companies as well as small and medium sized companies. The Transvision headquarter is located in Copenhagen with sales offices in Sweden, Norway, Holland and England. At present 40 people primarily educated within OR and computer science are working at Transvision. For more information, please visit our homepage at www.transvision.dk.
