Python has also a module for symbolic computation: SymPy. With that module it is also possible to do some numerical computations with matrices although with low performance: see Matrices.

However, for serious computations numpy and scipy should be used: Numeric Computation

The transformation of objects from SymPy to numpy is not trivial and prone to errors. If needed check the lambidfy function from SymPy.
