ALLE studerende på studieretningerne matematik, mat.øk. og datalogi, som læser på andet studieår og opefter, indkaldes herved til obligatoriske studieorienterende samtaler med lærerrepræsentanter. Samtalerne finder sted i kalenderugerne 45 og 46. Tilmeldingslisterne er fremlagt på IMADAs sekretariat.
Set fra jeres synspunkt giver samtalerne en mulighed for at stille spørgsmål om f.eks. hvilke valgfri kurser, I kan og bør tage, og hvilke muligheder for specialer, der findes på institutterne. Vort formål med samtalerne er at få overblik over, hvor mange studerende vi rent faktisk har på de forskellige ``udviklingstrin''. Desuden benytter vi lejligheden til at opdatere vort fotogalleri.
Der gøres opmærksom på, at alle ikke-aktive studenterkonti på UNIX-systemet vil blive nedlagt i løbet af november. De studieorienterende samtaler er måden, hvorpåman registreres som værende aktiv.

We continued to review elements of Statistics which maybe relevant in the empirical analysis of Algorithms. Among them the main concepts to remember are the difference between Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics, the measures within descriptive statistics and the statistical tests in the 2 sample case and in the multiple sample case (ie, ANOVA).
We gave examples of the use of these methods within the R Environment for statistical computing. This is a list of R functions worthwhile to remember: read.table, scan, table, mean, sd, var, median, fivenum, rank, t.test, wilcox.test, binom.test, lm, cor, aov and those for graphical visualization: plot, ecdf (from the default library and from the Hmisc library) boxplot, bwplot (from the lattice library), abline, lines, hist, barplot, plot.ecdf, density. Packages can be installed by install.packages(``NAME''). Help manual for each function is provided by the command ?name.func, and examples by the command example(name.func).
In the next lecture we finalize the part on empirical methods by
learning about sequential testing and giving going through application examples.
