Evaluation

The final evaluation is based on a project report and an oral exam (30 minutes without prior knowledge of the questions). Each count 50% of the total grade.

The projects are evaluated and graded by the teacher only and will include an oral presentation to the class by the groups and a written report. The external examiner participating at the oral examination will have access to the reports.

Grade scale is according to the Danish 13-point system.

The projects can be made in groups of up to three persons in which case each member of the group will be equally evaluated.

Oral Exam

This part is mainly aimed at the assessment of declarative knowledge, that is, the base knowledge of the topics treated during the course (see section Content of the Course). However, the capacity to use the methods learned on problems different from those studied in the course is also required and will be investigated. Questions may concern also the topics of the project.

Project

The project is suitable for groups of 2-3 persons. The intention is to assess the functioning knowledge, that is, the ability to integrate and use the knowledge acquired in the course for the solution of a real-life case. It is an "hands-on" research type assignment and creativity and originality of the solution approaches will constitute a plus.

The project consists in the selection of a real-life optimization problem, definition and modeling, development of local search algorithms for the solution of the problem, generation of test instances and analysis of results through empirical tests. The members of the group are supposed to collaborate but also to develop different ideas in their own codes.

The deliverables are: an implementation of at least one functioning algorithm for the chosen optimization problem, an oral presentation to the class of the work done, a written report (about 10 pages). The report and the implementation must be handed in at least 7 days before the oral exam.

See the section Exam Project for more details on the project.
