DM26, Fall 2004 - Weekly Note 1

Due to the number of people participating in the course, a second eksaminatorie class has been created. It takes place

Mondays from 12.15 to 14.00 in U80.

In the survey in class, 17 people indicated that this time slot is OK with them. If you are among these, please change to the new class (I ask all 17 since this number is still far from an even split of class). If you are not, you can still change if you want to.

Lecture September 1

Introduction to course. Introduction to Database Management Systems (slides: ps.gz, pdf). The Entity-Relationship Model (slides: ps.gz, pdf).

Reading

Ramakrishnan and Gehrke: Chapter 1 and 2.

Remarks

Our introduction slides do not discuss exactly the same subjects as Chapter 1.

There are many other database books covering the curriculum of the course. One example is Database Systems: The Complete Book by Hector Garcia-Molina, Jeff Ullman, and Jennifer Widom (Prentice-Hall 2002, ISBN 0-13-031995-3). This book also has an nice website, which includes slides. In particular, Ullmans slides on the E/R-model could be useful additional reading this week.

Lecture September 8 (expected contents)

Relational model. Transfer from E/R-model to relational model. Relational algebra.

Reading

Ramakrishnan and Gehrke: Most of Chapter 3. Sections 4.1-2. Note: we will not focus on SQL yet (contrary to the textbook).

Exercises September 6

Exercises 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, and 2.6 in Ramakrishnan and Gehrke.
